The Narrogin Agricultural Show 2025 is proud to present this year’s Writing Competition, inviting creative minds of all ages to take part in our Show theme:

“Where’s the Sheep?” 🐑

The competition is open to adults, high school students, and primary school students, with three exciting categories to choose from. Each category will have prizes for every age group, and winners (or a nominated proxy) will be invited to present their work on stage at the Show!

📌 Categories

1. Poetry
Write a poem about sheep – it can be funny, serious, traditional, or modern, as long as sheep take centre stage.

  • Judge: Published poet Frank Heffernan

  • Criteria: Original work, maximum 1 page, typed or handwritten, neat presentation (illustrations optional), no spelling errors, must include a title (but no author’s name – this goes on the entry form).

2. Short Story
Recount a true story about anything to do with sheep. For example:
🐑 A sheep as a pet
🐑 A run-in with a sheep
🐑 Shearing, herding, or losing a sheep

  • Judge: Published poet Frank Heffernan

  • Criteria: Original work, maximum 2 pages, typed or handwritten, neat presentation (illustrations optional), no spelling errors, must include a title (but no author’s name).

3. Song Rewrite
Take the words of a well-known song and rewrite them with sheep-inspired lyrics. Be as creative and witty as you like!

  • Judges: Songwriters Kay Weaver and Jan Smith

  • Criteria: Original work, maximum 1 page, typed or handwritten, neat presentation (illustrations optional), no spelling errors, must include the original title/author AND the new sheep-themed title. Do not include the entrant’s name.

🐑 Writing Workshop for Schools

Primary schools may request a special Writing Workshop run by two of our judges, Jan Smith and Kay Weaver, to inspire children and help them prepare their entries.
