Writing Competitions – Trains, Tracks and Traditions

Get creative with words and celebrate Narrogin’s railway heritage as part of the 2026 Narrogin Agricultural Show!

This year’s Writing Competitions are inspired by the Show theme, Trains, Tracks and Traditions, and are open to Primary School students, High School students and Adults living within 50 km of Narrogin.

Entrants can choose from three categories:

Poetry

Write an original poem about trains, railways or anything related to this year’s theme.

Short Story

Write a story about anything concerning trains – perhaps a train journey, a visit to a railway museum, memories or stories of trains in Narrogin, or your ideas about bringing trains back.

Song Words Rewritten

Rewrite the words to a well-known song using train-related lyrics, or rewrite the words to an existing song about trains.

Entries can be up to two pages. All entries must be original work, typed or neatly handwritten, include a title and may be illustrated. AI-generated work is not permitted.

Prizes

A $50 first prize will be awarded in each division:

• Primary School – $50
• High School – $50
• Adults – $50

How to Enter

There are two ways to submit your entry:

Option 1 – Online: Complete the Online entry form and upload your entry.

Option 2 – Dorcas: Bring your entry in a plastic sleeve together with your completed application form to Dorcas on Saturday, 12 September 2026, between 9.00 am and 1.00 pm. Application forms are also available from Dorcas on Tuesday mornings.

Important: Each entry must be submitted individually using the online form or an individual application form. Entries submitted in bulk by schools or groups will not be accepted.

Please make sure you read the judging criteria before submitting – it would be a shame for a great entry to be disqualified because it does not meet the requirements.

Make a Train Challenge – Let’s Fill Narrogin with Trains!

Calling all residents, businesses and schools – it’s time to get creative!

To celebrate the 2026 Narrogin Agricultural Show theme, Trains, Tracks and Traditions, we’re challenging the community to create a train and put it on display outside your house, business or school.

The challenge is open to participants within 50 km of Narrogin.

Your Challenge

Create your own 2D or 3D train or train-inspired artwork.

Anything goes when it comes to materials – use wood, metal, fabric, cardboard, recycled materials or anything else that inspires you.

Once complete, display your creation somewhere it can be clearly seen from outside your home, business, school or garden so the whole community can enjoy it.

Three Competition Categories

• Private Residences – $50
• Businesses – $50
• Schools – $50

How to Enter

Once your train is on display:

1. Take a photo of your creation.
2. Complete the Online entry form.
3. Submit your name, full address and a photo of your train.

Entries close Sunday, 20 September 2026.

Entries will be judged by the Narrogin Agricultural Show Committee, with winners announced on Facebook on Sunday, 11 October 2026 and recognised at the Narrogin Agricultural Show on Saturday, 17 October 2026.

Share Your Train Memories – Photo Board

Have you travelled by train somewhere memorable? Do you have an old family photograph featuring the railway? Perhaps you have photos of Narrogin or Wheatbelt trains from years gone by, a recent Australian train journey, or photographs from an overseas railway adventure.

We would love to see them!

As part of the 2026 Narrogin Agricultural Show, we are creating a special  Photo Board celebrating the Narrogin community’s experiences with trains.

Any Year. Any Place.

We are looking for photographs of:

• Train journeys
• Trains, railway stations and tracks
• Historic Narrogin and Wheatbelt railways
• Modern Australian trains
• International train journeys
• Family railway memories
• Anything train-related that is special to you

Please include people in your photographs where possible.

Your photos can be old or new, local or overseas – any year and any place!

How to Share Your Photos

Photos are to be submitted digitally through the Online entry form.

When submitting, please include:

• Your photo or photos
• The year the photo was taken, if known
• A brief explanation telling us who or what is in the photo, where it was taken and why it is special

The Narrogin Agricultural Show Committee will curate the photographs received for inclusion on the Photo Board.

Photos must be submitted by Sunday, 27 September 2026.

Selected photographs will be displayed as part of the Community Photo Board at the Narrogin Agricultural Show on Saturday, 17 October 2026.

Dig through those old photo albums and phone galleries and help us tell Narrogin’s railway story through the experiences of our community.
